| John Scofield is one of the most important of current jazz guitarists who amongst other things has played on several Miles Davis albums (the 1985 You're Under Arrest being the best of them). He also produced a number of first-rate Blue Note records in the early 1990s. His style is that of a jazz musician brought up with rock, blues and funk and he incorporates all these, whilst adding a unique Sco slant on them. A Go Go has him teamed up with young American hip funk meisters Billy Martin (drums), John Medeski (organ) and Chris Wood (bass). Together with the old pro they show how musicians who can really play can get onto the groove. Fusing retro and hip hop the quartet produce one of the most enjoyable of jazz albums from the latter half of the 1990s and in one go sweep aside the numerous acid-jazz-by-numbers groups who try to play funk but never get anywhere near as good as this. Scofield fans will expect this quality, but there will be many who are not familiar with him and see just a man looking like a session musician for Genesis but don't be put off: This man has soul. --Phil Brett | ||

| Scofield says about überjam that it's got enough funk for the college crowd and enough jazz for his old core fans, and he's pretty well right. It's tough to make a mark in the already well-gouged furrow of jazz-meets-hip-hop, and Scofield's so far had mixed success, but in überjam, he's produced his most consistently satisfying effort in the style. He's joined by his core trio, Avi Bortnick (guitars and samples), Jesse Murphy (bass) and Adam Deitch (drums and rap), plus guests John Medeski (mellotron, organ and clavinet) and Karl Denson (flute and saxophone). The result is a stew of high-energy grooves, spacey, sampled noises and swampy vamps. Perhaps the most succinct evidence of Scofield's happy symbiosis of jazz and dance is in "I Brake 4 Monster Booty", where a brief packet of hard, compressed rap precedes a ferocious guitar solo that has the pace and attack of a man half of Scofield's 50 years. In some of his jazz-dance efforts he's seemed content with laconic blues licks, but here the gloves are off. There's more intensely chromatic jazz in the grinding "überjam", the mood lightened by an ironically contorted quotation of "Blue Moon". That event is something of an indicator for the whole record: Sco's having a good time and making sure we get earfuls of the righteous stuff too. --Mark Gilbert | ||

| John Scofield has a talent for making interesting, quirky music by mixing funk grooves with unexpected sounds and novel turns, and that's certainly the case on this 1986 session produced by Steve Swallow. Bassist Darryl Jones and drummer Omar Hakim lay down solid patterns for Scofield's compositions, while Don Grolnick adds unusual atmospheric textures with his keyboards. While the title tune has a warmly reassuring, bluesy quality and most of the tunes have strong grooves, "Rule of Thumb" and "Gil B643" have eerily spacey harmonies and "Protocol" has erratic choppy rhythms. Through it all, though, the band is always together, wandering into fresh musical terrain in tight formation.--Stuart Broomer | ||

| In his CD Works For Me, guitarist John Scofield returns to the jazz heartland, focusing on straight-ahead, four-to-the-bar swing in the company of Kenny Garrett, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride and Billy Higgins--all masters of their respective trades. Scofield, one of the most distinctive and influential jazz guitarists since John McLaughlin, has always had a penchant for word-play titles (most of them in fact devised by his wife) and "Works For Me" is very probably a coded reference to the fact that in this album he favours the music closest to his heart. It's not all heads-down bebop though: there are chastened ballads and episodes of the funk vamping which has become Scofield's latterday signature; however, on this occasion even potentially banal riffing is spiced with harmonic surprise and enlivened by Sco's distinguished rhythm section. Scofield the instrumentalist also seems to enjoy a renascence, stepping up to creative levels he hasn't always reached in recent years. Such early triumphs as Rough House, Who's Who and Still Warm are run close, if not entirely recaptured. --Mark Gilbert | ||

| In the past, US guitarist John Scofield has explored the jazz-rock fusion to good effect, but recent times have seen him sliding back into a straight jazz bag. It's a courageous move commercially, because he'll surely lose some of the support he's so painstakingly accumulated; but you could make out no more convincing artistic case for it than this album, which sees him effortlessly move up into the jazz heavyweight division. Blistering solos, well-crafted compositions and a nicely balanced mood mix for the whole set; brilliant accompaniment from Charlie Haden, Jack De Johnette and underrated saxophonist Joe Lovano; and he hasn't even lost his knack for catchy licks and song titles, both evidenced on So Sue Me. NB: it's worth shelling out for the CD, which boasts three bonus tracks. --Brian Glasser -- (c) Emap Consumer Magazines Limited. | ||
