| Once Chet Baker arrived in California from his native Oklahoma, his career exploded. After landing gigs with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, Baker soon found himself a solo star and bandleader. Not long after that, he also found himself whispering love songs into a microphone. Baker was not gifted with the most robust voice of the day. Indeed, listening to pure singers like Nat King Cole or Johnny Hartman can expose Baker's weaknesses, but what Baker did he did well. By choosing wistful, so-young, so-in-love tunes, Baker was able to pour his heart into the material, sketching soft, romantic moods and painting himself as the broken-hearted innocent. The effect can be devastating, as Baker's voice clings to the melody, threatening to disintegrate at any moment. Many of his best tunes--"I Fall in Love Too Easily", "But Not for Me", "Let's Get Lost"--are collected here, and, as such, there is no better place to begin an appreciation of Baker's unique singing. --S. | Whether as a trumpeter or singer, Chet Baker was always the subject of controversy among jazz listeners, a victim of fashion who was doomed in his lifetime to be either over or under rated. These Pacific Jazz recordings from the mid-1950s present Baker the instrumentalist at the height of his popularity. While his coolly passive treatments of ballads like "Imagination" and "Stella by Starlight" may play to the languid stereotype of West Coast jazz, there's boppish fire and invention on the medium and up-tempo tunes, with Baker emphasising the middle register that was his forte. Altoist Art Pepper and valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer turn up among the supporting cast, and there's a good choice of material by boppish heads from both coasts, including Carson Smith's "Carson City Stage", Jimmy Heath's "C.T.A." and Al Haig's "Jumping Off a Clef". --Stuart Broomer | ||

| By the time the two men came together in 1977, Che Baker was prematurely aged by the hard life he'd lived in the underworld of narcotics. He was badly beaten by gangsters in 1968 and lost most of his teeth. He had to give up the trumpet for some time and worked as a petrol station attendant. The delightful Paul Desmond was a gifted and humorous man whose only apparent failing was his inability to stay in one place for more than one night because he believed that a jealous husband was pursuing him around the world to kill him while he was on tour. The tracks here were recorded at two sessions in 1974 and 1977: "You Can't Come Home Again" is Desmond's last ever recording. It's interesting to hear the two men responding so well to the disciplined settings provided for them by CTI, the original record company. Both play with poise and relaxation and each produces some of his best work. This is essentially a poignant album full of good improvising on imaginatively chosen themes ("Concierto de Aranjuez"!) and despite the tendency of Bob James's electronic piano to tinkle, it doesn't interfere. James is only on two tracks, being replaced on the other five by Kenny Barron and Roland Hanna. Anyone who has this album will play it often. --Steve Voce | ||
